library offers financial services with the opening of the Newcastle Building Society | News

Knaresborough Library has announced plans with the Newcastle Building Society to open a branch in its building to address the lack of much-needed financial facilities in the town.

Since the last bank in Knaresborough closed in 2021, we and Harrogate Borough Council have worked closely with the Company to maintain local access to financial services.

Scheduled for the summer, the community branch will offer the full range of services of the Society.

County Councilor Greg White, Executive Member of Libraries, said: “We are delighted to welcome the Newcastle Building Society to Knaresborough Library later this year. They already offer a community branch within the Hawes Library which has proven to be very popular with those needing access to cash and is a great way to multi-purpose an already well built building used.

“The financial services offering promises to increase attendance at Knaresborough Library and encourage new visitors to come through the doors. We can’t wait to see its grand opening this summer.

This will be the Newcastle Building Society’s 31st branch in the North East, North Yorkshire and Cumbria, following the successful launch of two rural community branches in Hawes and Wooler in Northumberland which opened in February 2020.

Andrew Haigh, Managing Director of the Newcastle Building Society, said: “We believe in the value of direct contact with customers and maintaining a physical presence within the communities we serve. We are absolutely committed to our high streets, which is why we continue to invest in our branch network and provide innovative solutions to meet the needs of each location, often working in partnership with councils and active community groups.

“We have exciting plans for Knaresborough, so we’re really looking forward to getting started and playing our part in helping this community thrive.”

Councilor Graham Swift, Deputy Leader of Harrogate Borough Council and Cabinet Member for Resources, Business and Economic Development, said: “The issues around the availability of banking services in Knaresborough have been well documented, and Harrogate Borough Council has made great efforts to find new solutions.

“I would like to thank North Yorkshire County Council and the Newcastle Building Society for their support of our ambitions to provide this vital lifeline to the people of Knaresborough.

“I am delighted that the Newcastle Building Society is opening a branch in Knaresborough Library and hope that local residents will use this service as much as possible.”

As well as supporting the Newcastle Building Society, Harrogate Borough Council has also worked with Barclays to bring its mobile banking service to the historic borough.
