In the latest episode of the “Ganado Meets Finance” podcast, Stephanie Farrugiasenior partner at Ganado Advocates, interviews Paulianne Nwokomanaging director of Apex Fund Services Ltd, on the representation of women in finance.

In the world of finance, women are still far outnumbered by men, especially in management positions. Yet studies and statistics in this area continue to recognize the value that women bring to the industry, even in leadership roles.

Reflecting on her career progression so far and having always been part of the industry, Paulianne Nwoko mentions the importance of discussing the involvement of women in the financial industry. She acknowledges the change that has occurred over the years, but points out that a gap remains in this area. She says women bring diversity in thought and are good leaders, but by often pushing women aside and not providing the right tools to help them advance in their careers, the industry is simply lacking in talent. .

In the financial industry, women and men usually start out on par, but as careers progress, women tend to be left behind. This may be due to several factors. Nwoko says it is relevant to revisit the role of women in society and despite improvement, there is still a lot to be done to break down the prejudice against women’s involvement in leadership positions.

Sustainability and gender

The EU is pushing change through the sustainability agenda and related regulation, but the focus still seems to gravitate to environmental factors, pushing gender issues to the bottom of the agenda, says Nwoko. Beyond the regulatory push, the interest of shareholders and institutional investors to develop this area remains important.

The role of the employer

The employer and those in leadership positions naturally play an important role in ensuring gender diversity in the workplace and even in leadership positions. Farrugia and Nwoko recognize the various initiatives in their workplace to encourage and facilitate the advancement of women in their careers. Nwoko talks about Apex’s Women Accelerator program, which provides tools such as coaching and mentoring, and provides a platform to discuss gender diversity in the workplace.
